During the months of August-September-October, we will be studying the following:
Math:
  • Represent and Interpret Data; Place Value; Addition; Subtraction; Understand Multiplication; Project based application
Language Arts : The Common Core Third Grade Standards of Reading Literature, Reading Informational Text, Reading Foundational Skills, Writing, Speaking and Listening, and Language are taught on a continual basis.
Character Counts - We are continually working on all of the Pillars of Character, but during these months we are focusing onRespect and Fairness.
History-Social Science - Continuity and Change - The Third Grade California History-Social Science Content Standards will be taught and spiraled throughout the school year. There will be an emphasis on the following standards the first half of the school year.
  • 3.1;3.1.1-2 - Students describe the physical and human geography and use maps, tables, graphs, photographs, and charts to organize information about people, places, and environments in a spatial context.
  • 3.2;3.2.1-3 - Students describe the American Indian nations in their local region long ago and in the recent past.
  • 3.4.1-6 Students understand the role of rules and laws in our daily lives and the basic structure of the U.S. government. This includes knowing the histories of important local and national landmarks, symbols, and essential documents that create a sense of community among citizens and exemplify cherished ideals including determining the reasons for rules, laws, and the U.S. Constitution; the role of citizenship in the promotion of rules and laws; and the consequences for people who violate rules and laws.
  • We will be covering both the California History-Social Science Content Standards and the California Environmental Principles/EEI.
Science10th Elams. Schroll - We will be covering the Next Generation Science Standards in my classroom. The sciences are not taught in isolation, but instead through the vision of the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards). Therefore, the different sciences (Earth, Life, Physical) will be interwoven throughout the year, the lessons and will also include Engineering Design with an emphasis on 3-5-ETS1-1, 3-5-ETS1-2, 3-5-ETS1-3. In addition, our science lessons connect with common core language arts and math; social studies; and the arts. Therefore, you will see these subjects mixed in our science lessons and science mixed into these subjects.
  • Earth Science - Standard 3-ESS2-1 will be taught from day one to the end of the school year. Expect your student to be discussing, learning about, and taking note of the weather and it's changes throughout the school year. Our Earth Science will emphasize Weather and Climate - 3ESS2-1, 3-ESS2-2, 3-ESS3-1. We will also be participating in Citizen Scientist projects: CoCoRaHS and Globe-Clouds
  • Physical Science will emphasize - Forces and Interactions - 3PS2-1, 3-PS2-2, 3-PS2-3, 3-PS2-4.
  • Life Science will emphasize Interdependent Relationships In EcoSystems - 3-LS2-1, 3-LS4-1, 3-LS4-3, 3-LS4-4 and Inheritance and Variation Traits: Life Cycles and Traits - 3-LS1-1, 3LS3-1, 3LS3-2,3-LS4-2.

P.E. - We will be covering all of the California P.E. standards throughout the school year. Our regular third grade P.E. time is on Mondays and Fridays for a minimum of 100 minutes every 5 days. There are additional times that we do P.E. as well. We primarily use the SPARK P.E. curriculum.
Fine Arts - We will cover VAPA Standards - Visual and Performing Arts Visual, Dance, Music, Theatre (National Visual Arts Standards are also covered in our Art Textbook); Students will be participating in Kennedy Arts Center activities, as well as other Visual and Performing arts enrichment activities throughout the year.

2018/2019 Book Report Due Dates
ClassesNOTE: My students must have their book report book approved by me before completing the book report or the student risks having to redo their book report should the book not meet the criteria for the assignment.
  • December 7- Fable, Folktale, Fairytale, or Myth Book Report Due. This type of book will follow the third grade ELA-Reading Literature standards. The book must have a central message, lesson, or moral. Students can choose a book from any of the many diverse cultures.
  • March 29 - Biography Book Report Due - The type of book for the biography will follow the third grade social studies standard. The biography book must be on the life of a famous national and/or local American who took risks to secure freedoms. This includes American heroes as well as leaders from all walks of life who have helped to solve community problems, worked for better schools, or improved living conditions and lifelong opportunities for workers, families, women, and students.

Toastmaster Speech Class Due Dates
  • Date TBD - Poetry Recitation (Top 1-2 students from each third grade class will be chosen to recite their poem at the Toastmasters Assembly on (Date TBD) Parents will be notified if their child is chosen
  • Date TBD - Informational Speech - The top student in each third grade class will be chosen to give their speech at the Toastmasters Assembly on (Date TBD) Parents will be notified if their child is chosen.
